Entering by land

You can enter Bolivia by road from any of the neighboring countries.

Routes are poor coming from Brazil so we suggest using the train service leaving/arriving from Puerto Suarez just close to the Brazilian border. Routes from Chile (Arica), Argentina (Positos and Laquiaca) and Peru (Puno), pose no major problems, some routes might require changing buses across the border.

If you're driving a vehicle either rented/owned, entering from another country you need a “hoja de ruta” (circulation card), available from the Servicio Nacional de Tránsito at the border. This must be presented and stamped at all police posts along highways and just outside major cities. Peajes (tolls) are often charged and all vehicles may be searched for contraband or possession of illegal substances.
