Coroico

Is located near La Paz (a three hour trip by bus), is a good place to spend a couple nights before heading into the Jungle on your way to Rurrenabaque and the Madidi National Park, or just to tour around and then get back to La Paz. Because of its lower elevation only 1,700 meters above sea level, the weather is quite nice compared to La Paz, much warmer and calmed, and has a resort-like feel to it. There are many ways to get from La Paz to Coroico, it can by bus, by bike or on foot, by bus is just a thee hour ride, if you dare you can ride a mountain bike down hill using the most dangerous road in the world, the infamous “Death Road”, the former main road, is used nowadays as a tourist attraction, on a three hour zigzagging adventure, before you embark on this adventure make sure you understand all the safety measures your tour guide recommend. Another way is to take a two or three day walk leaving from La Cumbre (the Summit at 4,700 meters above sea level, at a crossing point of the Andean Mountains) near La Paz, which will lead you to Coroico through ancient walk ways that the Incas used to get to the Yungas region. The most popular trekking tours is the old Inca Road "El Choro", which was the most important connection between the Yungas and La Paz until the 1930s. The other one is commonly called "Eco-via" using a path carved in the mountains, originally with the idea of having a train connection between La Paz and the Yungas. It never did function, but it left an excellent way to get to this region by foot, it's a much more accessible option for people not used to long walks. It can be done in two or three days, but come well prepared: the first two days you will not encounter any villages, therefore stamina and physical fitness is key on these adventures.

Already in town there's a lot of other tours an activities that you can take, they include: biking or hiking in the surrounding area, swim or water rafting in the near rivers, seeing local agriculture (coca, banana, coffee, citrus fruits, etc), old Casas de Hacienda (the houses of the former landowners), virgin forests and also visits to Afro-Bolivian communities.   And at the end of each day you can relax and just chill out at the pool, and at night go eat in one of the excellent restaurants. In Coroico you could enjoy a good pizza and beer in any of the many places that offer organic food. The food will taste good and different for the fact that is all naturally grown. Water is also clean and tastes very good in comparison to developed cities. If you are there for Semana Santa; expect to see a lot more people, getting a room in advanced is advised. There are daily busses leaving around noon to Rurrenabaque (a 15 hour trip).

Do's and Don't in Coroico

The cost of living in Bolivia is very affordable so don't be afraid of going out and splurge there's a lot to see in town or out of it be as adventurous as you can, taking always some precautions. In crowded areas be careful for pickpockets and bags lashers . A common trick is that one person spills something on your clothes, and while you or he wipes it off another person lifts your wallet or slashes your bag.

Be vigilant when checking into a hotel or hostel. Keep a hand on all your bags/belongings at all times. Acting as if they work for the hotel, opportunist thieves will create a diversion and snatch the nearest unattended bag.

If you are approached by police in civilian clothes don't show any valuables or your passport. And certainly don't get in a taxi with them. Undercover police are strictly ordered not to hassle tourists. There have been several cases of muggings and things going missing from bags or luggage after "drug searches". Insist on being taken to the police station before giving them access to your things. If you can, call the 110, which is the Bolivian emergency number.

And the most important there have been several cases of violent muggings in taxis . Don't take unregistered taxis. Lock the doors and don't allow other people to share the journey with you.
